Workshops, lectures, seminars, symposiums, and conferences are all types of events that can be used for professional development, networking, and sharing information. Nevertheless, there are some nuanced but key differences between these types of events:

A workshop is a session or event that is focused on practical training or skill-building, typically involving interactive activities such as demonstrations, exercises, and group discussions.

A lecture is a presentation given by a speaker on a specific topic, often in front of a large audience. Lectures may be a part of a university course or program, and they may involve some participation from the audience, but they typically tend to be more one-sided (lecturer-centered) than interactive.

A seminar is also a session or event that involves discussion and presentation of information on a particular topic, but most commonly done by one or more speakers. Seminars may include audience participation and may be held over the course of a few hours to a full day.

On the other hand, a symposium is a conference or meeting at which domain experts give presentations and engage in discussions on a particular topic. Symposiums may be held over the course of one or more days and may very well include panel discussions, keynote speeches, and breakout sessions.

A conference is generally a large event that brings together people from a particular industry or field to discuss the latest trends, share research and ideas. Conferences also give people the chance to network with one another. Conferences may be held over the course of one or more days and can include keynote speeches, panel discussions, breakout sessions, and exhibition halls.

To simplify things, a workshop is focused on practical skill-building, while a lecture is a one-sided presentation on a particular topic. A seminar and symposium both involve discussion and presentation of information, with a symposium focusing more on a particular topic and involving experts in the field. Lastly, a conference is a larger event that brings together a wide range of people (not only experts) to discuss a variety of topics within a particular industry or field.
