(1) and 主要指「和」或「也」，例如：
-He and his mother were here. 他和他母親曾在這裏。
-He was cold and hungry. 他又冷又餓。
(2) as well as 有時雖也可指「和」，但其深層意思常為「除…之外，也…」，例如：
-On Sundays, his landlady provided dinner as well as breakfast. 逢星期天，女房東除了早飯外，還供應晚餐。
還可指「不但…而且…」，例如：
-He has experience as well as knowledge. 他不但有知識，而且有經驗。
一般而言，在A as well as B 結構中，意義重點在於A。因此，上一句的意義重點在於experience；但中文譯出則次序倒過來，「而且有經驗」中的「經驗」才是句子的意義重點所在。
「as well as」和「and」的差異
1.「as well as」的作用類似於關聯連接詞「not only…but also」，它對所連接的項目加上不等的重點。在「as well as」之後的項目比之前的項目重點要小：
The service was prompt as well as efficient [重點在於prompt (迅速的)。]
2. 雖然「and」可以連接多個項目，但連接詞「as well as」本身不能連接超過兩個。如果我們要在系列中加入第三個項目，我們必須在其中兩個項目之間使用連接詞「and」。我們可以用不同的方式做到這一點：
A. 單獨使用「and」來連接整個系列，對所有三個形容詞給予相等的重點：
- The service was prompt, courteous, and efficient.
B. 結合使用「and」和「as well as」，對於在「as well as」之後出現的項目給予較少的重點：
- The service was prompt and courteous as well as efficient. [重點在於prompt and courteous。]
- The service was prompt as well as courteous and efficient. [重點在於prompt。]
3. 在文法上，「and」通常會使句子的動詞變為複數形式。使用「as well as」時，主詞不必然是複數。動詞必須與其主詞保持一致。
Alan and Leila are on the hunt for new job opportunities.
Maria, as well as John, hopes to complete the project by next week.
4. 在文法上，「and」是對等連接詞，可以連接單字、片語或子句。「as well as」當連接詞時用法類似 「in addition to」，無法連接子句。
Leila submitted her application, and Alan updated his resume. ✔️
Leila submitted her application, as well as Alan updated his resume. ❌
