到底該使用「ex.」、「e.g.」還是「i.e.」? 「etc.」和「et al.」又該如何使用?
「ex.」通常被視為「example」（範例）或「exercise」（練習）的縮寫，但它不是標準用法。
因此，在正式的寫作裡，不要誤將「ex.」用作「for example」的意思。
使用「例如」時，應該寫作「e.g.」而非「ex.」或「eg.」。因為，「e.g.」是從拉丁文「exempli gratia」縮寫而來，義為「舉例來說」，相當於英文中的「for example」或「for instance」。
至於「i.e.」，它是拉丁文「id est」的縮寫，義為「換句話說」。與之對應的英文為「in other words」，用以提供更多資訊來闡明前述內容。
此外，在舉例時還需留意「etc.」的用法——「etc.」是「et cetera」的縮寫。意味著「等等」，相當於英文中的「……and so on」。
範例：
I like many types of fruit, e.g., apples, bananas, and grapes.*
我喜歡很多種水果，例如：蘋果、香蕉與葡萄。
I’m going to the place where I grew up, i.e., my hometown.
我要去我長大的地方，換句言之，我的家鄉。
He bought a lot of vegetables, like carrots, potatoes, etc.
他買了很多蔬菜，像紅蘿蔔、馬鈴薯等等。
*e.g.(例如) 經常用於括號中。在學術寫作中，我建議僅在括號中使用它。雖然使用縮寫可以節省空間，但過度使用可能會使你的句子看起來雜亂無章。在正式寫作中，我通常會在句子的主要部分完整地寫出「for example」。
例：The inclusion of empirical data can strengthen research findings (e.g., surveys, experiments, and statistical analyses).
The inclusion of empirical data can strengthen research findings. For example, a study on the impact of dietary habits on health outcomes becomes more credible when supported by quantitative data from controlled experiments or surveys.
「et al.」（et alii）的意思是「等人」，用於表示人員（通常是作者）。這個縮寫可能見於正文的引用、參考文獻，或是對已提及的（或眾所周知的）出版物的簡稱。以下是一些例子：
Bowe et al. (2017) view policy documents as instrumental in transforming educational policies into legal mandates.
Consequently, one can infer that policy documents facilitate the conversion of policy into law and provide direction for implementers (Bowe et al., 2017).
最後，不要寫成「and etc.」，因為在「et cetera」中的「et」就已意味著「and」(與)。同時也不要在以「e.g.」（例如）開頭的列表中使用「etc.」，因為「e.g.」告訴我們尚有一個簡短的——但不是詳盡的——範例列表緊接在後，而「etc.」則告訴我們還有更多未被涵蓋的例子。將「e.g.」和「etc.」一起使用是多餘的。最後，不需要在「etc.」後面加上省略號（…）。相信讀者知道「etc.」意味著「等等」或「諸如此類」。
