VT Speaking Challenge 24: Movies Are Magic 魔法般的電影

Vocabulary Challenge 24: https://tw.voicetube.com/everyday/20190807

Script:

Some say that a movie is a universal language that lets us tell stories about our collective hopes and fears, and to make sense of the world and the people around us.

Can we think of another definition? Movies are stories shown at the cinema or on television? What words come to your mind when you hear movies?

Film? movie theater? entertainment?

It’s a universal language that lets us tell stories about our collective hopes and fears, to make sense of the world around us and the people around us.

這個共通性的語言讓我們可以用說故事的方式傳達共同的希望或恐懼,藉此理解這個世界和我們周遭的人。

So let’s say this sentence again.

It’s a universal language that lets us tell stories about our collective hopes and fears, to make sense of the world around us and the people around us.

Faster

It’s a universal language that lets us tell stories about our collective hopes and fears, to make sense of the world around us and the people around us.

OK, you know this game. What are the possible thought groups? 「字組」

It’s a universal language (1)

that lets us tell stories (2)

about our collective hopes and fears,(3)

to make sense of the world around us (4)

and the people around us.(5)

You don’t really need to pause between (1) and (2), or even (4)3 since it is essentially one clause. The next part–(4) and (5)–provides with the purpose of this universal language so I would clump 4 and 5 together. Again, this is what I would do, and I can only provide you with my reasoning.

How about intonation? 語調

It’s a universal language that lets us tell stories (rise)

about our collective hopes and fears,(fall-a break, this idea is somewhat complete)

to make sense of the world of the world around us (rise)

and the people around us.(fall)

What about the sentence stress? 句子的重音 You could say:

It’s a universal language (1)

that lets us tell stories (2)

about our collective hopes and fears,(3)

to make sense of the world around us (4)

and the people around us.(5)

So lots of content words here: universal language, collective hopes and fears, make sense, world, people

OK, it’s grammar time!!! 大家最愛的文法時間到了!!!

Today, we’re going to do something a little different. I want to mix speech with grammar and I want to show you how grammar can help you understand how people speak.

So listen to the sentence again:

It’s a universal language (1)

that lets us tell stories (2)

about our collective hopes and fears,(3)

to make sense of the world around us (4)

and the people around us.(5)

So this sentence is quite long. How can we possible remember grammar when we are speaking. The key is not having to remember but to be able to speak automatically without thinking too much about language forms. How? Practice!!!! Learn in chunks!

it is…something…that lets us
the computer is a tool that lets us explore the world from inside our rooms

the television is a tool that lets us know what goes on in the world

Facebook is a tool that lets us procrastinate and put off work.

Don’t memorize someone’s speech entirely  but you can memorize and use key sentence structures and lexical chunks your teachers point out for you. Could you do it by yourself? Yes, but it is certainly more effective if your teachers help you and you practice by yourself at the same time.

OK, let’s take a break!

But let’s simplify things. Many of us like to watch movies purely for enjoyment. What is your favorite movie? There are so many, but mine is probably Forrest Gump. Forrest Gump is a 1994 American comedy-drama film based on the 1986 novel of the same name .

The film was an enormous success at the box office and its soundtrack sold over 12 million copies.

The plot of the film is a straightforward story about the life of Forrest Gump, who despite his physical and mental disabilities, became a football star, a war hero, a ping-pong sports celebrity, a wealthy business owner, a father, and just a really really good and honest man. The story gets us thinking about life, and reflect on the choices that we made as an individual and a community. It’s a great film and I highly recommend it.

OK, let’s go back to vocabulary learning and go over some new words.
