Script:
The Pantheon! 萬神廟
The Pantheon was a Roman temple completed at around 126 AD, so how many years ago was that? About 1900? The Pantheon is one of the best- preserved of all Ancient Roman buildings, mostly because it has always been used, first as a temple to honor and then as a church. Millions of people visit the Pantheon annually.
Also, the word pantheon, when capitalized, means the most famous Pantheon, the circular domed temple we were just talking about. The Roman borrowed this word from the Greeks. That Greek word, pantheon, combines pan- (all) and theos (god). Later on, in English, “all the gods” was used to mean just that – a pantheon could be a collective of gods (as in “the Egyptian pantheon”).
The word has a new meaning after the 19th century. Now, when we do not capitalize the word, it means a small group of people who are a small group of people who are the most famous, important, and admired in their particular area of activity(某一領域的)名流,名人,重要人物.
Let’s move on to our sentence of the day.
As soon as you walk in, you notice that there’s a kind of obsession with circles, with rectangles, with squares, with those kinds of perfect geometrical shapes.
你一走進去就會發現萬神殿對於圓形、長方形、正方形等幾何形狀的要求一絲不苟。
So let’s say this sentence again.
As soon as you walk in, you notice that there’s a kind of obsession with circles, with rectangles, with squares, with those kinds of perfect geometrical shapes.
Faster
As soon as you walk in, you notice that there’s a kind of obsession with circles, with rectangles, with squares, with those kinds of perfect geometrical shapes.
OK, you know this game. What are the possible thought groups? 「字組」
As soon as you walk in, (1)
you notice that there’s a kind of obsession with circles, (2)
with rectangles, (3)
with squares, (4)
with those kinds of perfect geometrical shapes. (5)
How about intonation? 語調
As soon as you walk in, (rise)
you notice that there’s a kind of obsession with circles, (rise)
with rectangles, (rise)
with squares, (rise)
with those kinds of perfect geometrical shapes. (fall)
- Lists: rising, rising, rising, falling
What about the sentence stress? 句子的重音 You could say:
As soon as you walk in, (1)
you notice that there’s a kind of obsession with circles, (2)
with rectangles, (3)
with squares, (4)
with those kinds of perfect geometrical shapes. (5)
So the speaker is speaking in a voice that’s suitable for a formal setting. I mean, she’s in the pantheon and people are enjoying the architecture, she shouldn’t be overly stressing and speak in a very loud voice.
OK, it’s grammar time!!! 大家最愛的文法時間到了!!!
Today, we’re going to do something a little different. I want to mix speech with grammar and I want to show you how grammar can help you understand how people speak.
So listen to the sentence again:
As soon as you walk in, (1)
you notice that there’s a kind of obsession with circles, (2)
with rectangles, (3)
with squares, (4)
with those kinds of perfect geometrical shapes. (5)
Do you notice this “natural rhythm of the language (節奏,韻律)?
English is a very rhythmical language, so that a learner who can maintain the rhythm of the language is more likely to sound both natural and fluent. The two components of the system which have the greatest influence on rhythm are sentence stress and the various features of connected speech.
I want to ask you, why do you think this sentence as rhythm. There’s something special about the structure. Think about it.
there’s a kind of obsession with circles, (2)
with rectangles, (3)
with squares, (4)
with those kinds of perfect geometrical shapes. (5)
This is called parallelism (句子)排比,平行結構 in the structure.
The speakers connect his lists with
“with n.”, with n…and this pattern makes it easier for listeners to understand. For example, after with circle, the listener will expect to hear with n.
He or she will not expect to hear a verb phrase like go shopping. So by keeping in mind parallelism in your speech and writing, you can make your speech and writing clearer to your audience!!!
OK, let’s take a break!
So all this talk of the Pantheon has made me think of Greek mythology. I still remember reading about Greek gods and heroes when I was a kid in elementary school, and I think my favorite story was the twelve labors of Hercules. Hercules was the son of the union between Zeus with the granddaughter of Perseus, who was another Greek hero, but Zeus was already had a wife: Hera. Thus Hera, understandably, did not like Hercules very much and she even tried to kill him by sending two serpents to strangle him when he was just a baby. Of course, he survived. Through treachery, Hera made Hercules serve a sickly and vengeful king, who was afraid that Hercules would take his throne.
I’m not going to spoil the entire story for you but I will tell you what the story is generally about. It’s about Hercules completing the twelve labors and I think my favorite one was when he had to face a lion that could not be harmed by mortal weapons such as swords and spears. These stories were fascinating to me as a kid and definitely got me reading more about Greek culture. The Greek gods showed human qualities like rage, kindness, and even jealousy, and these qualities make them fascinating to read.
OK, let’s go back to vocabulary learning and go over some new words.
